Ovako highlights innovative thinking in advanced steels at the Z-Subcontracting Fair

Published 2019-02-05

Ovako, now backed by the global strength of the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) group, is at the Z-Contracting Fair to highlight how it combines innovative thinking in the application of advanced engineering steels with a wide range of ingots, blooms and billets to offer significant performance and manufacturing advantages for subcontractors. A main focus is on M-Steel®, which is the ultimate choice for superior machinability, as well as the new Hybrid Steel® that offers the properties of tool steel, maraging steel and stainless steel combined with the production economy of engineering steel. Visitors to Stand C70 in Hall 4 are also invited to visit Ovako’s steel mills without leaving the exhibition thanks to a new virtual reality (VR) tour.

Forging a strong future
Ovako is part of the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) which operates 12 steelworks in Japan, employs close to 100,000 people globally and is the world’s third-largest steel producer. This new industrial ownership further strengthens Ovako’s global offering, providing an opportunity for it to invest in longterm partnerships with subcontractors.

Following previous processing investments in bar peeling and heat treatment, Ovako is now investing in a new vacuum degassing facility for its Smedjebacken plant. Besides reducing its carbon footprint and energy consumption, the new facility will allow Ovako to improve steel properties to create new business opportunities for forgers in advanced sectors such as the automotive industry. Together with its three complementary production streams of ingots, blooms and billets and the strength of NSSMC, Ovako now offers a wide portfolio of advanced engineering steels to cater for the varying needs of the German subcontracting industry.

M-Steel for machinability
M-Steel is a low alloyed, or non-alloyed, machinability-treated steel that offers superior machinability to reduce machining costs. Hundreds of component manufacturers in the automotive and general engineering industries have successfully replaced conventional steel with M-Steel. The advantages, which are especially pronounced in automated turning and drilling processes, have also been confirmed by independent tests, with machining costs reduced by up to 30 percent.

Hybrid Steel for demanding applications
Hybrid Steel offers exceptional performance, especially at elevated temperatures, and can be produced in high volume to meet customer demand at an attractive price. The properties of Hybrid Steel are made possible by an innovative hybrid combination of secondary hardening and precipitation hardening mechanisms. The new steel can also reduce the number of manufacturing steps required to produce a finished component

The Z - Subcontracting Fair in combination with Intec, which is now in its 15th year, is one of the leading trade events for industry in Europe.

Carsten Blank, Managing Director of Ovako Germany said, “Subcontracting is about trusted partnerships, and visitors to the Z - Subcontracting Fair can see how Ovako works closely with its customers to optimize material selection, quality and consistency which brings performance and cost advantages across their operations.”
